DOUBLE EXPOSURES AND MATTE BOX TECHNIQUES ON 16MM FILM
THEN LEARN TO SHOOT SPECIAL EFFECTS ON THE BOLEX CAMERA USING A MATTE BOX FROM JOEL SCHLEMOWITZ
In this two-session workshop participants will learn the techniques of multiple-exposures and matte shots created in the camera for creative filmmaking. The technique of re-exposing film in the camera goes back to the days of the trick films of Méliès and has been used by film artists from Maya Deren, to Ron Rice, to Richard Tuohy, among many others. It can be a challenging technique to master but produces instances of pure magic on the movie screen when it succeeds. The first session will begin with an overview of the methods and outcomes for double exposures, the ghost effect, matte shots, use of a moving matte, and in-camera dissolves using the 16mm Bolex camera. Participants will then collectively shoot a series of practical experiments on 16mm film. For the second day of the workshop the previous session’s footage will be screened, and a collective project will be captured collectively making use of the array of techniques the workshop has covered.
The instructor of this workshop is the author of Experimental Filmmaking and the Motion Picture Camera. A copy of the book is included with the workshop. ($40 value!) Finished projects will also be presented after the conclusion of the course at our screening party at Anthology Film Archives!
