LEARN TRADITIONAL FILM MAKING WITH MONO NO AWARE

MONO NO AWARE offers PUBLIC COMMUNITY WORKSHOPS at our learning lab in downtown Brooklyn. These educational sessions are made affordable and accessible thanks to support from the New York State Council for the Arts, individual donors and patrons like yourself.

PUBLIC WORKSHOPS IN PERSON 2026

MONO NO AWARE is proud to offer traditional film making workshops to the community here in Brooklyn, NY. Offerings are all ages, open to the public for a hands-on learning experience. Instructors are locally-based, practicing filmmakers and artists looking to share their years of knowledge and experience.  All related workshop materials; film stock, chemical processing, cameras, editing and projection equipment are included.  At the end of each workshop session we organize a FREE public screening open to you and your friends!  Each session, MONO NO AWARE partners with local and international film festivals to offer entry waivers to all our participants.  To assist you in entering your work, MONO NO AWARE will digitally scan and host your finished film on our Vimeo+ channel. Please read our list of workshop policies (below) before registering.  These workshops would not be possible without the support of NYSCA ; New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the New York State Legislature . We are proud to have partnerships with KODAK, CINELAB, COLORLAB, FOTOKEM, and to work with THE GOWANUS DARKROOM.

+ TRADITIONAL 3-D STOP MOTION PUPPET ANIMATION ON 16MM FILM ** LIMITED TO 8 PEOPLE * ONLY 3 SEATS LEFT
Learn to build your own 3-D puppet and animate the form while capturing on 16MM film using the Bolex camera, animation motor and miniature lighting kit. You’ll build a skeletal structure, give the form body with foam material, cover the body with small clothes, design your own backdrop and props for a stop motion animated short.

Learn how to animate on 16MM film! You will receive training on the Oxberry Animation Stand and learn traditional animation methods; hand drawn, cut out and multi-plane. Everything captured on actual film, then developed, color printed and projected at your premiere screening. All materials included with extended access to the facilities through the month.

EN UN DIA: INTRODUCCIÓN INTENSIVA AL CINE EN 16 MM CON CÁMARA BOLEX 
En este taller, los participantes recibirán una introducción al formato de película de 16 mm. Veremos los distintos tipos de película disponibles y los flujos de trabajo contemporáneos en el cine analógico con demostración de la cámara de cine Bolex. El equipo incluirá: cámara Bolex Rex4, lentes fijos (prime) Kern Switar y exposímetro Sekonic. Repasaremos las reacciones químicas clave del proceso de inversión en blanco y negro. Todos los materiales, equipos de seguridad, productos químicos y cámaras serán provistos. La película se revelará en el mismo espacio de taller como parte del curso. Colaboraremos en un cortometraje breve y aprenderemos los conocimientos necesarios para que, en el futuro, puedas filmar tu propio rollo de película con confianza. Los proyectos terminados se presentarán tras la conclusión del curso en nuestra proyección de estreno en el MoMA.

Learn to expose and develop beautiful color forms and patterns onto 35mm color film with the use of color filters, a mag light torch set and D.I.Y. contact printing techniques. Gain access to the learning lab to develop your experiments further.

Sold in 25’ increments as double perforated 16mm film, the Double 8mm format “D8” has a unique work flow which requires the lab to slit the film in half after development and splice it back together to create the smaller gauge of Regular 8mm. Working with a D8MM BOLEX camera, D mount prime lenses we’ll use the camera to capture moving images in a way that subverts the intended workflow in order to create 4 separate quadrants projected simultaneously - Read more HERE.

Bolex 16毫米膠片攝影機拍攝單日工作坊. 課程簡介及大綱：
本次工作坊將介紹16毫米規格膠片電影的歷史，不同膠片的種類與選擇，當下的傳統電影製作流程，以及Bolex攝影機拍攝教學。工作坊將為學員提供Bolex Rex 4攝影機、Kern定焦鏡頭，以及世光測光表等設備。我們將介紹黑白反轉膠片沖洗原理，提供沖洗膠片需要的所有藥水和安全工具等，並在課程當天進行沖洗教學。
課程當天，我們會共同構思並完成拍攝一部影片，練習和探索拍攝膠片電影的技巧。共同完成的影片之後將在紐約現代藝術博物館（MoMA）進行首映。

ورشة مكثفة ليوم واحد: حول كاميرا الأفلام "بوليكس" (Bolex) مقاس 16 ملم. نبذة عن الورشة ومحتواها:
تعرّف هذه الورشة المشاركين على فيلم مقاس 16 ملم. سنتناول أنواع الأفلام الخام المتوفرة اليوم ومسارات العمل المعاصرة في صناعة الأفلام التقليدية، ثم نشرح عمليًا طريقة استخدام كاميرا بولكس السينمائية. تشمل المعدات كاميرا Bolex Rex 4، وعدسات Kern Switar ذات البعد البؤري الثابت، ومقياس الضوء Sekonic. وسنستعرض أهم التفاعلات الكيميائية في تحميض الفيلم العكسي بالأبيض والأسود. نوفّر جميع المواد ومعدات السلامة والمحاليل الكيميائية والكاميرات، وتُحمَّض الأفلام في مكان الورشة خلال الدرس. سننجز معًا فيلمًا قصيرًا مشتركًا، ونتعلم المهارات التي تمكّنك لاحقًا من تصوير بكرتك الخاصة بثقة. وبعد انتهاء الورشة، تُعرض المشاريع المنجزة في عرضنا الأول في متحف الفن الحديث بنيويورك (MoMA).

PRIVATE ONE ON ONE WORKSHOPS on a number of topics. Reserve an instructor for 2 or more hours at a time to be guided safely through any topic of your choosing. These include access to all equipment at the MONO NO AWARE center of operations, chemistry, editing stations and scanner. In some cases we can even come to you, meeting you in the closest public park to socially distance and guide you through the experience. Each private workshop is fully customized to your interest. WORKSHOP POLICIES
Workshop Registration:  Participants must register in advance for MONO NO AWARE workshops. Registration is possible via: PayPal with any major credit card, Venmo by request, with check by mail, or you can get in contact if you would like to register in person with cash.  MONO will provide masks and gloves to everyone who asks, hand sanitizer will be provided, all surfaces and equipment will be cleaned before and after sessions. Participation fee must be paid in full at time of registration. Registration is not confirmed until payment has been received in full. MONO NO AWARE workshops are non-transferable. No refunds, transfers or make-ups are allowed for any missed sessions for any reason. Please understand that if even 12 people asked for make up sessions in a single 6-week cycle that is an additional 30 hours added to our already busy schedule. For this reason, double check your schedule before registering. PLAN TO ARRIVE BEFORE THE WORKSHOP BEGINS ** if you arrive more than 15 minutes late, you will not be allowed to join the class. NO LATE ENTRY. It’s disruptive and a good deal of information is transferred within that first 15 minutes. Again, no late entry. Workshops are subject to schedule and instructor changes or cancellation at the discretion of MONO NO AWARE. All registered participants will be notified of such changes in a timely fashion. MONO NO AWARE reserves the right to use participant work created in MONO NO AWARE workshops for promotional materials including, but not limited to, workshop trailers, preview stills, grant applications and printed flyers. Participants have the option to notify us if they wish their work to be withheld from being included in such materials, this must happen before the class session begins. Participants also have the option, if they do not wish for their photographic likeness to be used on MONO NO AWARE'S website, social media, and/or any other promotional efforts. All such requests must be made at the time of registration. Audio and video recording of MONO NO AWARE workshops is not permitted.  Workshop Facilities:  Each workshop location will be noted in the course description.  Cancellation Policy:  Cancellations received via email only. Participants must cancel fourteen (14) full business days prior to the date of the workshop to receive an 50% refund. No compensation is available for cancellations less than fourteen (14) full business days prior to workshop start time.
