SPECIAL EFFECTS ON 16MM FILM:
JK OPTICAL PRINTING TECHNIQUES

LEARN TO CREATE COMPLEX SPECIAL EFFECTS ON THE THE JK OPTICAL PRINTER w/ MCOPY SOFTWARE CONTROLLER

In this workshop participants will be introduced to the JK optical printer to create complex special effects on 16MM film. The course will be taught on the J.K. optical printer that has been specially modified to alter time and perception in all the best ways possible : ) using the open platform MCOPY Software Controller, built by Matt McWilliams, who will lead the class. The MCOPY project, comprised of software and hardware for optical printers, built with re-purposed broken projectors. The workshop will cover the basic principles of the optical printer and introduce procedures for its use.  Optical printing is slow and exacting work.  As a group we will shoot, develop and view a very short film strip.  The workshop will demonstrate how to make tests, work with various film gauges (blow up and down!), control exposure and color, communicate properly with laboratories, and create a variety of effects including freeze frames, slow and fast motion, re-framing, reverse direction, superimposition as this model has two projector elements!   In this workshop we will cover a lot of processes, and work collectively to create a well developed short film - everyone is encouraged to bring found or original materials to manipulate. You will leave the workshop with the knowledge to operate the machine independently and credit to work in the space at a later date! Experiments created in the workshop will also be presented after the conclusion of the course at our screening party at a location TBA.
