PRACTICAL LIFE : ALTERNATIVES TO STANDARD PROJECTION

LEARN TO RE-APPROPRIATE TOYS FROM THE 1970s THAT RAN ON SUPER 8MM FILM TO SHOW YOUR OWN WORK!

In this workshop participants will learn some of the alternatives to standard projection for presentation of Super 8mm & 16mm film. We will explore a specialized collection of toys and devices from the 1960-70s & 80s, some battery powered and hand-crank mechanisms that operate with Super 8mm film inside of them. Participants will each receive their own motorized toy that runs on Super8mm film and learn step by step how to dismantle and replace the stock footage with your own unique film! These repurposed devices can serve as a vehicle for home presentation, gallery presentation (“art object”) or as a unique gift to family/friends. Participants are encouraged to bring a single 50 foot reel of original Super 8mm film footage and will walk away with the ability to create their very own self contained viewing system (provided)  Finished projects will be presented after the conclusion of the course at our screening party at a venue TBA.
