Join us for an intimate screening presentation with artist / filmmaker / preservationist, Bill Brand. This special program will present a selection of his early work made between 1973-1983. Bill’s technical proficiency and playfulness are ever present in these early experimental films. His non-traditional approach to using computer generated and analogue traveling mattes is both innovative and entrancing. The process is technically challenging, but at no time does the work abandon the personal, giving each motion pattern a familiar warmth.

ABOUT BILL BRAND:
Bill Brand’s films, videos and art installations have been exhibited extensively in the US and abroad in museums, film festivals and microcinemas. His 1980 Masstransiscope, an animated mural installed in the New York City subway, is in the MTA Arts for Transit permanent collection. Bill Brand lives in New York City and is Professor of Film and Photography at Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts as well as Adjunct Professor of Film Preservation at New York University’s Moving Image Archiving and Preservation graduate program. His company BB Optics specializes in archival film preservation of small gauge films and films by artists. In 2006 he was named an Anthology Film Archives Film Preservation Honoree and given a month long retrospective to celebrate BB Optics’ 30th anniversary.

The CONNECTIVITY THROUGH CINEMA series will present the work of artists, film-makers and curators who are traveling or presenting special interactive programs in-person. Our hope is to engage the community by showing work with a focus on post-screening discussion.
