Picture Enlarged To Show Detail

‘Picture Enlarged To Show Detail’ consists of several works on film by Bruno Delgado Ramo plus two site-specific cinema-based performances which ushers in the event itself, pointing out the body dimension of film presentation. ‘Expectation In the Air’ continues this reflection playing with the required conditions for projection to show up. ‘Practicaje/Frame Lift’ and ‘Unabridged Maneuver’ take up in-camera editing as a form of on-site investigation into several harbouring areas conceived as technical spaces while examining the double sense of manoeuvre as the material operations carried out with one’s hands and the procedures on board when approaching a harbour.

Program:

‘Usher Me In Please’ / 2023, 10min, performance with torch, door and seats

‘Secuencia de haces en vivo’ / 3min, performance w/ cinefoil and projector (w/o film)

‘Expectation In the Air’ / 2022, 5min, double projection, 35mm (24fps) and Super-8mm (24fps) film, Super-8 w/ magnetic sound / The projectionist arrives early at the open-air projection place. Although the chairs have not yet been laid out, a white rectangle already shines in the background.

‘Practicaje/Frame Lift’ / 25min, S8mm, 18fps, silent / A study on port piloting practice and pilotage areas (where only an expert, the harbour pilot, can manoeuvre thanks to his thorough knowledge of these waters) in A Coruña, Cádiz, Bilbao and Toronto.  The exploration of the choreography of dockworkers and the harbour landscape lead to defining a series of recurring gestures and motifs, attempting to establish correspondences between them and certain elements of the cinematographic practice. Some of these recurring motifs are taken up again ‘Unabridged Maneuver’ such as the ladder hung over the cargo ships (for the pilot to get on board from the launch) and the climbing itself or the water depth measuring scale painted on the ship's hull.

‘Unabridged Maneuver’ / 2022, 17min, 16mm film, 24fps, silent / Conceived as an investigation about harbors’ piloting areas and the frame maneuvering with the Bolex, the film shifts between the studio’s editing table at LIFT facilities (Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto) and various locations on the western shore of Lake Ontario. The word manoeuvre refers both to the material operations carried out with one’s hands and to the procedures on board when approaching a harbor. The film explores the idea of precision in both practices.
