PROGRAM INCLUDES

INJECTION NO. 1, 2020 by Lauren Henschel
INFUSION NO. 1 is a performance of a single take of my weekly infusion of medication. The film itself has been hand-processed and treated in chemicals and the very medication I am injecting myself with in the film, connecting my body to celluloid. I make this work to lay bare a reckoning between what is felt and seen and what is apprehended while living in our bodies, especially one that needs to be modified to function. The recent spread of the coronavirus across the globe has forced people everywhere to feel some degree of fear and disillusionment with how safe they feel in their bodies—something that the immunocompromised, and the greater community of people with disabilities, experience as a constant. My purpose is to foster consciousness around this “condition,” of residing in the temporary shelter of a body, of the impermanent and illusory concept of being well, and to engender empathy for people who live inside this awareness every day.

Lauren Henschel (b.1992) is a visual artist working primarily in hand-processed 16mm film, installation and performance. Her work interrogates questions around guilt, illness, disability, shame and mortality and seeks to defy or alter an audience’s expectations and experience of what art can reveal about the experience of inhabiting a body. Born and raised in Miami, Florida, Lauren is currently based in Durham, N.C. Her work has been displayed at numerous venues, including Carnegie Hall and the Miami Art Museum. She holds a B.A. in Visual Media Studies from Duke University. This spring, she received an MFA in Experimental and Documentary Arts from Duke University.

With this series we ask that each presenting artist identify a non-profit they wish to bring attention to and support through this screening. Lauren has chosen The Okra Project, The Okra Project is a collective that seeks to address the global crisis faced by Black Trans people by bringing home cooked, healthy, and culturally specific meals and resources to Black Trans People wherever we can reach them.

Please consider making a donation to support.

MONO NO AWARE OPEN AIR SCREENING SERIES:
The OPEN AIR SCREENING SERIES allows for 16mm film projection viewing with social and physical distance guidelines in place.
16mm film prints are projected, on loop, from dusk until dawn. Each artist receives an honorarium from MONO to support their practice. Each artist is asked to select a non-profit for a portion of the proceeds to benefit, to which MONO will make a donation in their name. And, YOU the audience are invited to enjoy the work, take part in the conversation and we ask that you consider making a donation as it directly supports the artist and the organization with which they share concern.
