जान की ओर (jaan ki or), 2021 *excerpt
by Shrey Mendiratta

Jaan ki or is a film in progress, assembled of 16mm film footage and field recordings collected in western Rajasthan in early 2020. The film moves between scenes following ceremonies, meal preparation, communal gatherings, and so on, reflecting the daily life and traditions of Thar Desert villages and their people. As a tessellation of image, sound, silence, and text, the film expresses the tensions in capturing these images and presenting them before a removed audience. This excerpt was filmed at the precipice of the Covid-19 pandemic. Now, nearly one and a half years later, my family in Delhi, as well as these friends in Rajasthan, are experiencing the pandemic at its worst. Perhaps this is the most potent time to meet this footage and ask, what does it mean to watch these images from such a distance? Let it also be a moment for us to gather together, and share our means with the people in need, far from us, made near in this moment.

Filmmaker and visual artist based in Ridgewood, Queens, born and [half-]raised in New Delhi, India.

With this series we ask that each presenting artist identify a non-profit they wish to bring attention to and support through this screening. Shrey has selected the Khalsa Aid & Project Sunshine India.
