’FRANTIC FRAMES’
MULTI-PLANE, LIVE-MORPHING
ANIMATION WORKSHOP

WITH VISITING ARTIST AND ANIMATOR MARTHA COLBURN

We are excited to host a workshop with visiting artist Martha Colburn, whose approach pushes the limits of the fantastic, humorous and strange potentials of animation. Participants will get to work with the artist to collaborate on an animated short as she shares methods particular to her own practice. You’ll get hands on experience with direct ‘under-the-camera’, multi-plane and live-morphing techniques, including variants using lenses, gels, lighting tricks, and layering acetate. Participants are encouraged to collect and contribute or create materials such as collaged, painted, drawn, cut, or found objects that they would like to animate. We will cover the creative process of animation from research, idea formulation, sketch and script planning, to frame-by-frame execution, while taking turns in the roles of animator, camera person, special effects and lighting assistant. It will be an experimental and playful introduction to the possibilities of animation.
