OPTICAL PRINTING TECHNIQUES

LEARN TO CONTROL TIME WITH THE JK OPTICAL PRINTER + PRESENT YOUR FILM AT OUR SCREENING PARTY

In this workshop participants will be introduced to optical printing as a technique for 16mm experimental film making. The course will be taught on a JK optical printer that has been specially modified to alter time and perception in all the best ways possible : ) The workshop will cover the basic principles of the optical printer and introduce procedures for its use.  Optical printing is slow and exacting work.  As a group we will shoot, develop and view a very short film strip.  The workshop will demonstrate how to make tests, work with various film gauges, control exposure and color, communicate properly with laboratories, and create a variety of effects including freeze frames, slow and fast motion, re-framing, reverse direction, superimposition, bi-packing and aerial printing as this model has two projector elements!   In this workshop we will cover a lot of processes, and work collectively to create a well developed short film - everyone is encouraged to bring found or original materials to manipulate. You will leave the workshop with the knowledge to operate the machine independently. Finished projects will also be presented after the conclusion of the course at our screening party at Anthology Film Archives!
